Fatal Side Swipe Car Accident In Collier County

According to a January 29, 2023 Naples Daily News Report, a 43-year-old Naples man was killed in a recent side-swipe car accident in Collier County. It happened on State Road 82 west of Church Road during the early morning hours. Florida Highway Patrol reports that the man was driving a Ford pick-up truck when he was struck by another driver in an opposing lane.

A 20-year-old man from Labelle in a Dodge truck that was pulling a trailer was traveling eastbound on the road when he veered left of the center lane and struck the other vehicle, which was headed in the opposite direction. The left side of the Dodge truck collided with the driver’s side of the other vehicle, causing him to crash.

Unfortunately, the Naples man involved was pronounced dead at the scene while a passenger with him in his truck was taken to a local hospital with serious personal injuries. Police are continuing to investigate the crash and have not indicated whether any criminal charges will be filed in the case.

How Side Swipe Car Accidents In Naples Happen

Of the more than 5,000 car accidents in Collier County each year, sideswipe accidents are among the most common. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), they can happen in a variety of ways:

  • Failing to stay in your own lane: Frequent lane changes are a frequent contributing factor as is swerving due to inattention, avoiding obstacles in the road, or in response to other motorists.
  • Improper passing: Cutting other motorists off when passing is a common type of aggressive driving behavior that can cause sideswipe accidents.
  • Improper turns: Making turns too quickly or too wide can impact other motorists nearby.
  • Failing to yield: This is another common type of aggressive driving behavior that increases the odds of a sideswipe crash in Naples.

Speeding or going too fast for conditions, driving distracted or under the influence, and tailgating other motorists can all increase the chances that a side-swipe car accident will happen. If you or someone you love is involved in this type of crash, you have the right to hold the at-fault driver accountable, either through an insurance claim or by taking them to court. In cases of fatal injuries, surviving family members may be entitled to file a wrongful death claim.
