Speed, Visibility Common Factors In Fatal Naples Pedestrian Accidents

Pedest6

There has been a steady number of pedestrian accidents in Naples. Unfortunately, these have increasingly proved fatal for victims. Speed and visibility are common factors in these crashes. Our Naples pedestrian accident lawyer explains more about the risks and the rights of surviving family members in filing a claim.

Speed, Poor Visibility Increase Fatal Pedestrian Accident Risks In Naples

Based on crash reports from the Florida Department of Traffic Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), more than 130 pedestrian accidents in Collier County happen annually. These end up claiming the lives of an average of five people each year. However, these numbers appear to be increasing.

Recent news reports indicate that at least five people have been killed in pedestrian accidents in the Naples area over the past few months alone. These include:

  • A male pedestrian, who was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross U.S.-41 Tamiami Trail East at 10:30 in the evening on February 27, 2023;
  • Another male pedestrian, killed on McGregor Boulevard while walking during the early morning hours on February 13, 2023;
  • A third male pedestrian, killed on December 13, 2022, while walking along Pine Ridge Road at 1:45 a.m.;
  • A female pedestrian, who was killed in December 2022 at 7:15 p.m. on Little League Road near American Way;
  • A fourth male pedestrian, and the fifth person killed in just three months, who died after being struck on the evening of December 9, 2022.

In all of these crashes, speed and poor visibility were contributing factors.

Holding At-Fault Drivers Accountable For Fatal Pedestrian Accidents

Walking during the evening or early morning hours makes it more difficult for drivers to see you, increasing the risks of pedestrian accidents in Naples. If you are walking near major highways or interstates, the high rates of speed drivers are traveling increases the risks as well. Speed-related factors that often contribute to fatal pedestrian accident injuries:

  • Drivers are less likely to notice a pedestrian on or entering the street;
  • Once they do see them, they have less time and ability to stop or otherwise avoid hitting them;
  • The high speed increases the force of impact, making pedestrian injuries more likely to prove fatal.

Speeding is one of the most dangerous driving behaviors. However, on many heavily traveled  roads throughout the area, speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour are permitted. Drivers involved in fatal pedestrian accidents in these areas may not face criminal charges but family members of victims may be entitled to hold them accountable and get a sense of justice through a wrongful death claim.
