Aggressive Driving Increases Naples Car Accident Risks

RoadRage2

Traffic in Naples gets significantly heavier from the end of spring and into the summer months. Whether you travel on major highways or near city beaches, you are likely to encounter tie-ups and traffic delays. Drivers who are already aggravated by the heat can easily lose their patience and become aggressive with other motorists. Our Naples car accident lawyer explains how this increases the risk of crashes resulting in potentially serious personal injuries.

Former Congressman Accused Of Aggressive Driver After Rear-Ending A Florida Trooper In Collier County

Aggressive driving behavior is common on major highways and interstates. However, particularly when traveling at high speeds, it can significantly increase the risk of personal injuries. Former North Carolina Congressman Madison Cawthorn was recently accused of aggressive driving on Interstate 75 in Collier County, where he ended up rear-ending a Florida State Trooper.

According to an April 2024 Naples Daily News report, the trooper was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries. The Congressman has a history of run-ins with the law due to traffic offenses and recently bought a house in Florida after his defeat in a 2022 election. He was cited under the state’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to move into other lanes when approaching a law enforcement vehicle.

A nearby motorist and witness to the accident posted about it on the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter. He said the Congressman’s black rented Mercedes had been tailgating him for miles before the collision.

Aggressive Driving Puts All Naples Motorists At Risk

It is easy to lose your cool when dealing with heavy traffic conditions in and around Naples. Unfortunately, as the above story illustrates, doing so endangers not only you but others on the road. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), aggressive driving is a common cause of car accidents and something that 80 percent of all motorists admit to engaging in. It includes:

  • Tailgating, or following too closely;
  • Speeding and going too fast for traffic, weather, or road conditions;
  • Failing to yield;
  • Running yellow or red lights;
  • Cutting other drivers off in traffic;
  • making angry, aggressive gestures;
  • Following or attempting to race motorists as a way of ‘getting even’.

This behavior is dangerous whether you are traveling major highways or smaller, local roads. If you encounter an aggressive driver during your travels, steer clear and refuse to engage with them.

If you are involved in a car accident in Naples caused by an aggressive driver, notify the police right away, get contact information for everyone involved, including witnesses, and seek medical care immediately to protect your health and your rights in filing a claim.
